"Outdoor Adventures - Canal floating under the road."

Dad asked all of his kids to write some stories about our childhood. He assigned us all topics/memories to write about. Here is my first story:
___________________________________________

We always had fun as children but the days that we enjoyed the most were when we were outside and privy to the wild whims of our own imagination. The summer months, when we were out of school, housed the best moments for adventure and  for childish mischief.  These days began with breakfast and chores and then as soon as we were released we were out the door, on our bikes and racing toward our next quest.

This particular day was started with a warning from our all knowing and wise mother, "Don't play in the gutter's at the Business Park.  I don't want you guys getting wet today."  The past few days had been raining and so there were ample opportunities to get wet and the business park, only blocks from our home, was the most recent host to our summertime adventures.

We tried to follow and remember this command until we arrived at the Business Park gutters.  The water was cool and flowing in such a tempting way.  We started by playing next to the gutters but as our sticks fell closer and eventually into the water we were forced to fetch.   The water was almost to our knees and flowing with a slow tide.  We began following the tide down the gutters, barely noticing the gradual increase of flow in the cool water.

Eventually we arrived at the end of the gutters, where the water dipped into a large pipe and out of site.  This was intriguing to us; where did it go? What lived down there? How deep was it? Being the big and responsible sister I inched closer to investigate this childish inquiry.  As I got to the opening of the pipe the water deepened and the tide picked up.  Before I knew it I was being sucked into the big engulfing pipe and swooshed to the unknown.

I grabbed onto the edges of the pipe, creating jagged cuts in my small fingers, and screamed for my brother to help me.  He pulled handfuls of  long grass, stick or anything he could think of to lower to me and pull me to safety.  Nothing worked and soon my fingers weakened and released.  I remember screaming as I watched my brothers small worried face and my escape disappear at the end of the hole.

As I continued through the drainage pipe images of what lied ahead zoomed through my mind.  The most horrifying and probable situation in my mind was that there was a giant fan at the bottom that would chop anything big that went through it before releasing it into the sewers.  This fan's sole purpose was to stop big logs, rats and small children from get into the sewer.  I tried frantically to stop myself from reaching that fan.  I grabbed onto the corrugated metal of the pipe, wedged my fingers in any cracks and around any screws and even tried crawling back against the flow of water.
After what felt like hours of struggling and continuing to be pushed through this pipe I saw a light ahead.  The light grew bigger until I saw that it was an exit to the pipe, and not a child eating fan.  I released my grip and let the water push me towards my exit.  As I approached I tried to look out and see where I was but noticed that I could not see anything but a sharp drop.  Again I panicked at the unknown ahead of me but before I could stop I was hurled out of the pipe and dropped five feet into a large drainage canal.

The canal water was much deeper than the pipe and was moving quickly.  I struggled to stay up and tried to get to the banks when I saw my rescuer approaching.  My little brother  had ran across a busy road to follow the drainage pipe to the other side and upon seeing me fall out had grabbed the biggest branch he could carry and dipped it into the water for me to grab onto.

Once safely on shore we collapsed in a pile of tears, exhaustion and a small rush of excitement at our adventure.  One might think that after such a life altering ordeal we would go home and recover from this near death experience but we did not.  Already wet, we took our bikes to the nearby river and swam for a while. On an errand to find us our big brother soon arrived and escorted us home with a smug grin that said, "You guys are in so much trouble!"

Upon arriving home, soaking wet and covered in mud and slime, we braced ourselves for our mother's rath.  Instead of yelling or grounding us she told us that we had to sit in the backyard until we were dry and that if we were not dry by dinner, we did not get to eat.  Joyfully we agreed to her terms and began playing in the backyard gloating in our minds that we were being punished with our favorite pass time.  After a while, we began to get hungry and were mostly dry so we approached the back door to beg our dear mother to honor her side of the agreement.  When she saw us she said that we were too dirty to go into the house and promptly picked up the hose and sprayed us off. Returning to the house she turned and again repeated the punishment, "You cannot come into the house until you are dry."

We stayed outside drying off till nearly seven that night and well past dinner time.  We had disobeyed our mother by getting wet and been punished. Our own consolation was that she knew nothing of the sewage drain or we would have been sleeping outside with the dogs.

Beautiful Women

Taylor asked us to all to pick a picture of ourselves and write why the picture you took makes you feel beautiful; Its supposes to be beauty beyond worldly and societies rules of beauty; there is no one type of beauty and there are different aspects of being beautiful!  This was a great idea and really made me think about beauty and who I am.  It was also wonderful to see the responses of my sisters!

BREANNE: As I thought about what makes me beautiful I immediately thought of my outside appearance and then about my hobbies, interests and even goals. However the more I thought of these things the more I realized they were fleeting and changing; my hobbies at 13 were much different than at 22 and my goals at 16 are much different than they are now. True beauty is not fleeting but is sustained through one's life and eternally. I then began thinking of the things in my life that are sure and eternal, the things I love and treasure most. These things were not things at all but roles and relationships that I hold most dear. I am a sister; most of my childhood memories involve one or more of my siblings. They are some of my closest friends and as we have grown I have come to know them differently and love them more. I am a daughter; my parents have always been a sure foundation in my life. My mom has taught me the value of order and given me a love for creativity and my Dad has instilled in me a love for learning and a good hearted humor. I am a wife; I have a loving husband who loves and cares for me in good times and through struggles. I have learned patients, humility and perseverance through his example. I am a mother; I have learned and developed a new and greater love than I ever thought possible. I have learned of selflessness and gained a better understanding of my Heavenly Father's love for me. That brings me to the knowledge I have that I am a child of God; I know that by following the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ that I can return to him. Through these roles I find the beauty in myself; I am a sister, daughter, wife, mother and a child of God.

TAYLOR:  I feel beautiful when I am doing the things that make me feel like me. The things that make up the basis of who I am as a person. When I follow the teachings of Christ, when I play soccer, when I draw or paint, when I read, When I write while listening to music, when I teach Page the things that I love, when I dress comfortably, when I throw my hair into a ponytail, when I put on make-up, when I hug my friends, when I smile at my own whiteness, when I quote movies with my family, when I accept every part of me that influences my individuality in this world and just let go of other peoples expectations, that is when I feel most beautiful. When I feel like me. There are so many times that I forget my worth and forget that I am individual with individual goals and wants. When I realize Heavenly Father created me as me and not as anyone else, that is when my beauty shines. When I let me be me I realize how beautiful it is that I was meant to have all of my little quirks that I have. That I was meant to have the talents I have and I was meant to use them. I feel beautiful when I found out one of my most important parts about myself is Page. She is my beauty and purpose extended and is a part of how I make me, me. I feel beautiful when I embrace everything that makes me who I am because all of the good I have to offer comes from a loving Father in Heaven, who understands me far better than anyone could because He was the one who gave me my design. And it is beautiful.

ANDREA: I feel beautiful when I am with people, in this case women, who remind me of who I am!

ANDI: This was hard for me because I very rarely look at a photo of myself and think I look beautiful. The more I thought about it there are definitely different moments in my day or my life that I do feel beautiful. Those times are when I feel the most confident in myself. When I feel confident I feel beautiful. So I started to think about what makes me feel confident. There are definitely material things that make me feel confident. Like a wearing a new outfit, getting my hair done or even just getting my toes polished. But I would have to say there is a lot more to me feeling beautiful or confident than just material things. I think first it is being around people who I love and that love me just because of me. That of course would be my family and friends. When I am around my husband he makes me feel beautiful by the way he treats me and his kind and encouraging words. He makes me feel like I can do anything. He gives me confidence. I also feel this confidence when I am being active. Right after I work out I feel “beautiful” because I have done something for myself and it makes me feel good and accomplished. I find when I am serving others, I feel beautiful. I feel beautiful when I am laughing and having fun with my children. They make me feel youthful, which makes me feel beautiful. They also make me feel needed and wanted. I can also see in them the love that our Heavenly Father has for me and for them. That makes me feel beautiful.

ERICA: so, I went sort of a different route. First of all, when I thought about what makes me feel beautiful, I really couldn't think of anything. I don't see myself as a pretty person. I'm just normal, average, and generally unextraodinary. I have my flaws that I see and certainly focus on too much and I have the quick ability to disappoint myself. with all that, I decided to do some soul searching. I am happier now than a year ago. I am grateful for so many things. I enjoy so many things. I am happy. I think happy people are beautiful. Hence, I must think I'm beautiful. So, I wanted to show some of the things that make me happy. It was a lot of fun to think of things that brought joy, a smile, satisfaction, and peace to my life. Evelyn was a helper photographer and she jumped in. I love that picture more than the others. Each thing in the picture shows something that makes me happy.
Art, exercise, music, helping others, my beliefs, freedom to come and go, my family, and so on - these are the things that make me happy. And happy people are beautiful.

New York New York!!!

Ben and I lived in NYC right after we were married and we loved the big city.  The Dawson's are living so close to NYC and we thought it would be a shame for them not to visit the Big Apple while living in the east.  So in a completely selfless spirit we decided to take them to NYC on a' guided tour.'

Day 7: We left early Friday morning and drove (well we mostly slept while Ben D. drove- he is awesome)straight to NYC.  As we drove out of the New Jersey tunnel into Manhattan we were struck with the awe of the tall buildings, tree lined streets and homeless man peeing in a jar? Yep, that was Andrea's first experience in NYC, not the most glamorous but pretty accurate.  The first hour was a blur; parking near the hotel, walking to the subway and getting oriented and starting on our busy day of walking and sightseeing.  The Dawson's were a little overwhelmed and nervous for the first little while; the places we went and saw were packed with people and tourists and they were quickly thrown into the rush of a NYC lifestyle but they slowly started getting used to it.  In the first hour Jasen described it as, "Being as busy as Washington DC and as dirty as LA but crammed closer together." By the end of the weekend he said that he probably could/would live there! Here is some of what we did:

We went to the 9-11 Memorial building.  We did not have tickets so we just saw from outside and we didn't spend too much time there because it was very crowded.  We then walked to Trinity church, a beautiful old church in downtown Manhattan.

Then we walked down Broadway to see Wall Street and ended at the Bowling Green, home of the famous Charging Bull.  The bull was crowded with tourists so we did not spend too much time there but made our way south to Battery Park.

Waiting at the Bowling Green
Looking up Broadway!
Battery Park is at the southern tip of Manhattan and is one of the best land views of the Statue of Liberty (we did not go to the statue but just saw it from afar).  At Battery Park we watched some street performers while eating  some traditional food truck hot dogs.

We then walked along the south coast of Manhattan and saw the South Street Sea Port on our way to the Brooklyn Bridge. On our walk we saw City Hall and wore out Elizabeth!

The Brooklyn Bridge is a great place to see the skyline of Manhattan.  It was a long walk but beautiful and so fun.

Look at the poor sleeping baby!
Ben and I walked the Brooklyn bridge as newlyweds on one of my first nights in NY.  We took a picture then and took the same picture now; it is crazy to see how much we have changed and how much we have grown in almost 7 years!
The bribery to get the kids across the bridge was the promise of famous ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.  It was worth it; it was delicious and Elizabeth loved it (she had not had a cone before and thought that was a cool new way to smear chocolate on her face).  While we waited in line for the ice cream, Elizabeth ran around the park chasing pigeons!

We then hopped on the subway, which took us to mid- Manhattan and spit us out at Bryant Park.  From Bryant Park we could see the Empire States building and walked to Time Square.
You can see the Empire States Building right behind her!
We saw Time Square in all of its glory in the early evening; the lights were shining bright, there were tons of street performers and crowds of tourists.  We saw all the billboards, Broadway signs and the New Years ball (which did not impress the kids).  We ate dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, always a fun experience, and then went to the many fun shops in Time Square.

We went to the Toys-R-Us; which has an indoor ferris wheel, huge dinosaur replica, lego displays and so many cool toys and things to see.

We also went to the Hersey's store (we got free kisses) and the M&M Factory.  Spencer kept saying, "I didn't even know they had this many colors of M&Ms!"

We left Time Square early to get back to our hotel and settled; we were all so tired.  We stayed at a Hampton hotel on 6th and 23rd; it was weird to see a hotel smashed in between buildings but it was nice.  Ben, Ben and Jasen went to the car to get all our luggage and noticed that one of the wheels in the van was flat; so Ben and Ben spent the evening getting that fixed (poor guys).  It was an exhausting but super fun day!!
Mom wont let you jump on the beds at home but in a hotel- jump away!!

Day 8: We had a slow leisurely morning (at least as leisurely as you can with a 1 year old) and enjoyed that wonderful breakfast buffet.  Then, after loading the car, headed out on our second day of our NYC adventure. The bottom floor of the parking garage that we parked at was having a garage sale/ flee market; it was really cool to see all of the antiques and fun stuff being sold.
Our lazy morning!

We then made our way to the upper east side of Manhattan.  We got off the subway and walked up 5th Avenue, and saw all the fancy shops, towards Central Park.We walked through the Central Park Zoo, but didn't go in.  The kids liked seeing the zoo that the movie, Madagascar was made about.

We then walked through Central Park; the kids liked climbing the rocks skewed around.  There were two races going on at the time so the park was busy. We went to the famous Central Park Boathouse and got to  lounge on the rocks and we saw a ton of turtles.

We then saw the Bethesda Fountain, a famous fountain in Central Park that is in a lot of movies.

The photographers!
We walked across Central Park to Columbus Ave. We walked south on Columbus to Ben and my favorite pizza place.  There we got two big pizzas and ate in the small park across the street from the temple. They loved the New York style pizza and we tried 'Wafles and Dinges' (dessert waffles) for dessert.

The New York Temple is really cool because the bottom layers are a church building and the top floors are the temple.  We went in to use the bathroom and the Dawson's were shocked at how peaceful and spiritual it felt (verses the busy streets of NY).

We then went to Columbus Circle to catch the subway to go to China Town.  In China town we went to Canal Street, which is where all of the tourist shops are. We were able to look around and haggle for some 'china town' souvenirs.

From there we went back to the hotel because we had to leave to make it to the airport for our flight.  We had lots of fun on the subways and by the end the Dawson's were old pro's!
Awww!
It was so hard to leave the Dawson's (we had so much time) but being shoved out of a car in rush hour traffic to catch a subway makes the parting quick! We spent an hour on the subway (with an overly tired and grumpy little girl) and then went to wait in the airport.  And wait... and wait! Our flight was delayed a little over an hour (we were supposed to leave at 7:50 and didn't leave until almost 9:30).  Elizabeth and Ben both slept through this flight but, for the life of me, I could not sleep.  We arrived in Denver around 12:50 (poor Elizabeth had a hard landing) and did not get home until past 2 (thanks Mom and Dad for picking us up so late).  It was an exhausting ending to our speedy fun filled week!!
Cute baby girl running laps in the airport in her PJ's

We really had so much fun and wish we could live closer to the Dawson's.  Elizabeth had fun with her family and convinced them that she was cute (not too hard).  It was a fun adventure and definitely an experience to remember!!
